Escape is Diana’s only option, and she’ll pay any price to achieve freedom.

Universally blamed for the death of his wife and unborn child, Simon Hastings doesn’t dispute his guilt over an accident he cannot even remember. He hasn’t had a drink since, nor a moment’s peace. But how can a man haunted by the love he lost and a woman afraid to get too close find happiness together?

This was my first Historical Romance novel I have read in awhile and it was not a disappointment! It brought me back to another time, another world and I loved getting lost in it. I finished this book while driving on a trip and it was the perfect car ride read.

Diana was born to be a duchess- her father made sure of that. However, things take a turn for the worst when Nick, the Duke she was engaged to marry, runs off with someone else. Luckily, his best friend Simon steps in with a plan and saves the day, sort of. It’s while on this surprise journey with Simon- the Duke of Ruin- that she finally gets to be herself, that she truly finds herself. Out from the shadows of her father, she can enjoy life, laugh, and ultimately receive love for the first time. And while Simon’s intentions start off innocent, it becomes pretty clear that these two belong together, even if it could cause a scandal for Diana.

This was the first book I have read by Darcy Burke and will not be my last. I have forgotten how much I enjoy historical romance and I am so happy to have found an author that does it justice. Everything about the book was perfect and took me right back to the old time world that no longer exists. I love nothing more than to get lost in that world and this book took me along for the ride. Diana is a spit fire of a woman and while she lacks a lot of life’s enjoyments, she sure does well to find herself pretty quickly. The scenes in the book are hot but without being too cheesy for the time period they are set in. This was a well written book and deserves the praise as such!

I have given this book 5 stars because it was a great read for me, it had everything I was looking for in a historical romance novel and it was an excellent story to pick up and read. The flow of the book was great without being boring and it kept me entertained for the whole car ride. I highly recommend this book if you enjoy historical romance or are looking for a historical romance book to try.
